Skryf
Skryf is an independent online journal of short fiction, poetry and essays, in Afrikaans and English side by side. It is a place to read, with no paywall and no adverts, just words.
The writing is sorted into plain categories. In Afrikaans there are kortverhale (short stories), fiksie, poësie and gedagtes. In English there is fiction, flash fiction and poetry. Essays appear in both languages, and Skryf carries series as well as single pieces, among them an essay series on vulnerability.
Several pieces are gathered into collections called Bundels. The current ones are Oh My A.I., Afterglow en kerkbasaars, Fie, Platplek se mense and Die Saai Lewe. A reader can pick a language, pick a form, or start with a Bundel and read in order.
The journal carries a roster of writers rather than one voice, each with their own writer's page. Established and newer writers are both welcome.
Skryf is open to submissions. Writers with poetry, short stories or essays can send them to neer@skryf.co.za, and every submission is read. The Afrikaans line on the homepage asks it more directly: have you written something that belongs here?
Reading is free and needs no account. There is also a newsletter, called Leespos, and readers can sign up through leespos@skryf.co.za.
Skryf is published online and is free to read. It suits readers who want a quiet corner of the internet for Afrikaans and English writing, and writers looking for a home for a poem, a story or an essay. To read, go to skryf.co.za and choose Afrikaans or English from the menu.
