The business

Rare Ritual

Rare Ritual is a Cape Town skincare brand that makes high-performance natural skincare, formulated and produced in South Africa with no synthetic ingredients. Each product is made to treat a specific concern, from pigmentation, acne and dryness to sensitivity, redness, dullness, fine lines, scarring and a damaged skin barrier, across face, body, eyes and beard.

The formulas combine rare African seed and fruit oils, among them Kalahari melon, marula, baobab, prickly pear, sea buckthorn and tamanu, with named actives such as bakuchiol, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and caffeine, and with grass-fed tallow, whose fatty acid profile sits close to the skin's own oils. Vitamin E is part of every formula. The oil-based products are anhydrous, so they are made without water, and the Eye Renewal Complex, which does contain water, uses a minimum amount of preservative.

Labels are written to be read. Ingredients appear under their full INCI names with the common name in brackets, in order of concentration, and fragrance is never collapsed into the single word "Parfum". Each ingredient has to earn its place by offering a skin benefit, stability, safety or sustainability, and petrochemicals, parabens and fillers added for texture stay out.

The range is organised into four main Rituals by skin concern. Clarity is for congestion and breakouts, Radiance for dark marks and uneven tone, Renewal for firmness and ageing, and Calm completes the four. There are Ritual packs for men too. Each formula is meant to do the work of several steps, so a routine needs fewer products. If you are unsure where to start, the Ritual Finder on the website recommends a Ritual from the concerns you give it.

The shop carries more than seventeen numbered products. These include the No. 01 Facial Mousse, a body melt, oil serums, active serums and toners, an eye complex, a tallow magnesium lotion, shower mists and, most recently, a moisturiser and a lip renewal oil serum.

To buy, order at rareritual.co.za. Rare Ritual delivers across South Africa. A rewards programme returns credit on what you spend, and the range is also sold through stockists. Questions go to shop@rareritual.co.za or WhatsApp, answered Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00.
