Why they're good

Gavin and Belteshazzar run the shop themselves and stock the work of more than a hundred small, independent artisans and crafters. Many pieces are recycled, upcycled, handmade or fair trade, and new stock arrives regularly.

This shop has been one of our favourites. We were happy to see they are still around after almost 19 years. It is nice to see how they reinvent themselves - the shop always looks classy, fresh and modern and the vibe is as good as always. Super friendly service, a great curated selection, a great selection of limited edition prints and Cape Town travel posters. Beautiful handmade South African gift items. And very well priced. A must see!

I had a wonderful experience at Baraka Gifts. The owner and his partner were incredibly welcoming and took the time to explain the story behind the gift I purchased. They were also great at sharing insights about the Cape Town area, which made the visit even more enjoyable. Excellent service, beautiful items, and genuinely kind people - highly recommend stopping by!

What made my visit especially lovely, though, were the owners. They were incredibly warm and welcoming, happy to chat and clearly genuinely passionate about the shop and the people whose work they sell.

This small shop is a hidden gem in CapeTown, and a wonderful one to visit when seeking lovely handmade items in one place before departing. Both store representatives showed us various items and had terrific information about the tribes and crafts people who had created them.

The founder

Gavin Terblanche and Belteshazzar Raubenheimer

Gavin Terblanche and Belteshazzar Raubenheimer

Gavin Terblanche and Belteshazzar Raubenheimer own Baraka, and they have run it as an owner-driven gift shop since 2007.

They chose the name because Baraka means a blessing in Swahili, and they wanted to share their blessings with their customers. They believe in design and social responsibility, which is why they stock so many recycled, upcycled, handmade and fair trade pieces from artisans of different cultures and backgrounds.

They keep the shop fresh by changing its look and feel often, so a visit a few weeks later shows new things. Their loyal customers call it "the little shop with the big heart".

The business

Baraka Gifts and Decor

Baraka is a gift and decor shop in the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village in De Waterkant, Green Point. Gavin and Belteshazzar opened it in 2007.

The shelves hold arts, crafts, jewellery and decor from South Africa and beyond. There are handmade leather notebooks and photo albums, hand crochet hats, shell and driftwood spoons, Panama hats and handbags, kikoys, limited edition prints and Cape Town posters, cushions, ceramics, lamps and hand-woven Zulu baskets made from recycled telephone wire. A few vintage pieces with a retro charm sit among them, along with African pieces from makers of many backgrounds.

More than a hundred small, independent artisans and crafters supply the shop, and many of the products are recycled, upcycled, handmade or fair trade. Stock changes regularly, so the shop looks different from one visit to the next.

A selection is sold online, with courier delivery across South Africa, collection from the shop, and shipping overseas.
